Cardiac surgery outcomes in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): A case-series report

Abstract Objective The impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the postoperative course of patients after cardiac surgery is unknown. We experienced a major severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak in our cardiac surgery unit, with several patients who tested positive early after surgery. Here we describe the characteristics, postoperative course, and laboratory findings of these patients, along with the fate of the health care workers. We also discuss how we reorganize and reallocate hospital resources to resume the surgical activity without further positive patients. Neurogenic pulmonary oedema after generalized epileptic seizure

The diagnosis 'tonic clonic seizure' is frequently established by emergency physicians on scene. In patients with epilepsy mortality due to accidents, asphyxia, cardiac arrhythmias or postictal neurogenic pulmonary oedema (NPO) is twice as high as in the general population. We report a case of acute pulmonary oedema after a tonic clonic seizure. Following this event, the patient developed respiratory insufficiency and evidence of pulmonary oedema not associated with the classic aetiologies of congestive heart failure, aspiration or toxic exposure. Acute pancreatitis is an acute inflammatory process localized in the pancreatic gland that frequently involves peripancreatic tissues. It is still under investigation why an episode of acute pancreatitis remains mild affecting only the pancreas or progresses to a severe form leading to multiple organ failure and death.
